Platforms Project P44
ΕN FLO proposal for Art Athina 2015

“Short stories”

The EN FLO proposal for Art Athina 2015 has to do with their action which will be held on September 2015, at the Asia Minor cultural Museum of Aigaleo. There different artists will be inspired by the collections of the museum and individual works will be used to create a single entity. Essentially, the action at Art Athina will be a bridge that links two places, as well as the human experience, operating as a platform for the exchange of ideas. What we are concerned with is how a small Museum like this, which is in fact a small core of historical material and social awareness, can be the trigger to make a greater dialogue related to political, social, ideological and cultural concerns. Our aim is not only the diffusion, the expansion and the creation of a network of Art, history, conversation but also compassion.
On the platform project of Art Athina, EN FLO will bring printed images, paintings of memory and pictures of people that lived in Asia Minor. By sewing those pieces together they will create a large patchwork with the help of the women of the Association of Asia Minor “Nees Kydonies”.
Conceptually speaking, the act of sewing refers to the stitching of images that are related to individual human stories that together make an entity. An entity that is nothing other than human history, or the pixels that make an image, or how the cells create the human body.
This stitching refers to yesterday as well as today, to the communion experience of ancestors and their descendants and also to the cite of memory for the purpose of purification.
A wall made from old costumes functioning as a fortress to protect the continuing action that will be held from EN FLO to the pavilion P44 of the platform projects at Art Athina. The visitor is invited to enter, participate and win his own fabric piece of “short story” by guessing key words.

ΕN FLO-performances:
Friday 5th & Saturday 6th of June
19.00-19.03, “plant a pomegranate...remember me...,” Penelope Gaitis, performance 3 minutes

Sunday 7 of June

Many thanks to: “Asia Minor cultural Museum of Aigaleo”, the Association of Asia Minor “Nees Kydonies”, Dipethe Kozanis, the director Helen Dimopoulou and set designer Takis Sintoukas.

Press Release for Action “SISYphṓs’’

Project “SISYphs’’

This year’s proposal of EN FLO borrows  its meaning from the mythical narrative of the Sisyphean effort. This  theme, highly up to date with our times, motivates team EN FLO to ponder and raise questions concerning  today’s  human condition, by using  all the tools its members possess as they attempt to converse with the community of art.

The action will be presented at the Platform Project, within the parallel program of the national exhibition of Art Athina, at the Tae Kwon Do Stadium,  located at the kiosk P35, from the 16thuntil 19th of May.  Early in the morning of  Saturday the 18th, the Sisyphean Route will set out from Faliro and end up at Benaki Museum (1, Koumbari  St.  and Vasilisis Sofias St.) at Kolonaki,  approximately at 12 at noon, having covered a 7 km distance. In the evening of the same day ( 6 -12pm) and in the same spirit of the previous action, a shortened  wood engraved row of the Sisyphean effort, as another section of the project, titled “Aid-Change”  will be available for the public’s thriving creativity at the atrium of the Historical Archive of the National Bank (Diomides Mansion, 146, 3rd September St. ).

Participating in the project will be, young visual artists of the Department of Visual and Applied Arts in Florina, from the University of Western Macedonia  and the interacting visitors.  Let’s now bring in mind the image of Sisyphus, painstakingly pushing the immense boulder up to the top of the hill, only to see it rolling down again.

In the words of A. Camus:  “The reason why this myth is tragic, is exactly because its hero is conscious of his torture; it wouldn’t be a punishment,  was he hoping in every step that he would make it.”. This image leads us to become aware of the ability of humans to “accept the unacceptable”, which, depending on whether that is experienced with realization or radical projection, turns into an advantage or a conviction.
Based on the speculations that rise from  the interpretation of the myth, EN FLO, suggest a series of events that address, in an artistic manner, the following questions:

How could a constantly cancelling movement be defined? How could a compulsive movement, which repeats itself without ever reaching the final fall, be considered? How does one maintain labor when necessity is being removed? How does one reverse the right of justification through labor? How could human existence can be transfigured in endless conviction? How could a conviction be experienced as a trial leading to knowledge? How could realization make the trial beneficiary? How could the ‘’light’’ arise from experiencing human anguish?
EN FLO group attempts to ‘’trace’’ the above  mental  Sisyphean ‘’trails’’,  of course with the help of the public.

The project is realized with the commission of :  Organizing Committee of Art Athina 2013Benaki Museum, Historical Archive of the National Bank, Academy of Athens, Centre for Research of Greek Ethnography, network of Museums and Cultural  Commissions of Athens, Department of Visual and Applied Arts, U.O.W.M. in Florina.
Assisting this effort of EN FLO were also the:  independent news website ‘’TVXS’’ ,  Company of Tourism of Western Macedonia,  the transport company ‘’Pouhias’’ in Kozani, news website ‘’Florinea’’, bus service of Florina and the wood trading company ‘’Stavrou’’  in Florina.

Sisyphean Route, 18th of May, 9 am
(Open invitation for anyone, wishing to help push our Sisyphean boulder for 7 km.)

The journey starts from Art Athina (Tae Kwon Do Stadium) at 9 am. We will be crossing the bridge over the Delta of  Faliro and arriving at the point of the old race course. Then we will walk the Doirani St., and go past the Onasio. Arriving at the end of  Doirani St. we will continue on the Alexandrou Pantou St.. Afterwards, we will go through Lagoumigi St. via the underpass and on to the Kalliroi St., to get on the Dimitrakopoulou St.. Continuously, we will walk all the way until Makrigianni St. in front of the new museum of Acropolis, and then  go straight on,  reaching the gate of Adrianou. Then we will move towards the Parliament, and being on the sidewalk of Vasilisis Amalias St., we will continue to the Vasilisis Sofias St. , all the way until we arrive at the Benaki Museum, at approximately 12, noon.

Documentation of the interactive performance of the artistic group EN FLO, “SISYphṓs’’ [1]

J.L.Borges has written about a man whose life goal is to paint the whole world. Which world though? The world of crisis? Crisis apart from a problem is also a reason for speculation and more than a crisis is critique. In today’s society, crisis not only forces us to drag and push a huge load of unfortunate events and dotted situations, which are often determined by others. We are also forced to think of this image as the limit of our times. Ernst Bloch used to say that, from the moment you think of the limit, there comes the opportunity to think of how to overcome it.

The man, who will paint the world, will paint us as human gears, depicted with pessimism and gloom. Simultaneously he will also paint the Sisyphean effort which never stops, carrying on endlessly, to define itself beyond the automatism of the machine gear. Will we be able to realize that? The team paints, traces all those trails of images, fragments of lives of so many Sisyphis.

SISYphs  is this years project for the EN FLO team, which suggest a protest against the problematic policy of economy and intensification of work. The project will spread out from the par excellence space of the huckstering art trade, all the way to a historical cultural entity of the last 140 years. Between those two points of culture, with one of them verified to be exercising the economy of the art market, lies the abyss of the city and life, which EN FLO are going to enlighten by turning Sisyphus into SISYphs.
On Saturday 18th of May at 9 am, from the art fair of Art Athina, we will cover 7 km of Sisyphean effort, following a route, pushing altogether the 32 images of the painter Borges (in the form of a massive sphere), to a luminous trail of liberation, which will end up oddly at the Benaki Museum. The spoilage caused to the images by the journey, as descending rags of a doomed period, will become the surface for frottage ( a gesture of tracing a textured surface) for those who wish to keep a part of the world.
During the Night of the Museums, the process of the frottage will be carried on as a section of the “SISYphs’’  project, titled “Aid-Change”, at the atrium of the Historical Archive of the National Bank. A wooden, engraved row, a collapse of the Sisyphean Route, also a part of the world, will be presented and offered to the publics’ thriving creativity.
Let’s now bring in mind the image of Sisyphus, painstakingly pushing the immense boulder up to the top of the hill, only to see it rolling down again.
In the words of A. Camus:  “The reason why this myth is tragic is precisely because its hero is conscious of his torture; it wouldn’t be a punishment,  was he hoping in every step that he would make it.”. This image leads us to become aware of the ability of humans to “accept the unacceptable”, which, depending on whether that is experienced with realization or radical projection, turns into an advantage or a conviction.
“It is understood that Sisyphus actions are rather unreasonable, his liabilities and suffering makes him quite irrational as a hero.” He is forced to experience the trial - and sooner or later the time for everyone’s trial will come-: what lead him there was his passion for life, that is now showing another side of it, the boulder. There, beyond anything else, he is expected to face his own self. Why become alienated from this torture, giving up on the boulder -the last being a metaphor of life-, at the will of others? Why remake a god unknown to us?
“You are god”, Jesus said, knowing his upcoming suffering. A.Camus wisely concludes that “happiness and irrationality are inseparable children of the same mother. There’s no light without shadow, and we must be acquainted with darkness as well”.
So the boulder, is life itself, which each one of us must accept consciously and demand not only to experience it, but also get to “know” it. “SISYphs’’  teaches the absolute faith that denies gods and lifts boulders. And he thinks that all is “good”.

EN FLO May 2013

Narrative Biography/ May 2013

Τhe artistic group EN FLO, (En Florini) was established in the winter of 2011. It is comprised of students, graduates and professors from the Department of Visual and Applied Arts in Florina University of Western Macedonia, in order to present their actions at main cultural events in Greece and all around Europe.

Their first participation was among the parallel actions of the International Art Fair ART ATHINA 2011 with two art events:
1. «BANK_ART_NOTES». Each En Flo member-counterfeiter printed and distributed their own artistic money to the public. Visitors chose the banknote they liked the most and it was printed on a small press machine by members of En Flo group. The goal was making a correlation between:  money –value,  money –social recognition, money – identity, money– state, money –Europe, money- financial crisis, money – artWhen visitors left they took with them an authentic printmaking banknote.

2. «IMPRIMATUR». The action took place using engraving and printing methods.  By rolling oversized inked printing cylinders on the corridors of the Art Fair they printed words, pictograms and symbols on paper spread throughout the area. Those statements are related to their concerns about contemporary art and the current social situation. The printing  results of those thoughts have a flow that become a base-canvas of the next set of actions. Visitors were invited to respond, react, undo, comment or delete the words as they see fit, by using big rubber stamps with new words or symbols that they choose.  By making layers of words, images, views, and symbols, a visual dialogue takes place on the long path of printed paper.

Other actions of the En Flo:
3rd International Streer Theater Festival (June 31-July 4, 2011). That was the second participation of the group and their first time in public space. It lasted three days and took place at Syntagma and Kotzia Square in Athens. There En Flo met people and printed banknotes with them.

Two day interaction with people and installation at PARAPERA multi purpose art space at Acharnon Str., in collaboration with Technohoros (July 2011). That was the third action of the group in Athens. It was intended to visualize and tell the story of a laundry. The result was a laundry line of underwear hung with printed banknotes left to dry.

The Collectors of the Last Day (September 24-September 25, 2011) This was the fourth participation-exhibition of the group. It took place in the Municipal Gallery of Athens during the exhibition of George Economou Collection. Taking inspiration from the  original paintings of the collection, the En Flo members engraved in linoleum new works of art. Then the engraved linoleum was cut in smaller pieces, and the submultiples were printed. In this way the first work of art was lost and a new one was formed from the smaller pieces.

BANK_ART_NOTES with tail (November 10, 2011). En Flo participated in the group exhibition Small Gardens of Happiness that took place at the Art Foundation (TAF gallery) located at Monastiraki area in Athens. En Flo printed their own artistic banknotes which were freely distributed to the visitors. In this way the group tries to symbolicly break into a person’s most secret paradise.

Τhe Εn Flo Bench (December 21, 2011). A very different bench was set up this time at the main market of Florina. Full of inspiration and with lots of fun the En Flo had engraved their banknotes in linoleum. Then in two small press machines set up in the main market of the city, the members of the group printed and distributed freely, artistic banknotes to the citizens of Florina. Resulting correlations of:  money –value, money –social recognition, money – identity, money– state, money – europe, money- financial crisis, money – art.

Winter Festival in the Edge of Town (December 23, 2011). Since everyone became rich at Florina two days ago, we decided to burn the money on the 23 of December. The fire at Oniron str. started from the enormous sculpture of a banknote made by Filippos Kalamaras. The fire spreads and the performance begun. What a shame for the money. Everything was on fire and the snow was full of stars from the star-fireworks made by En Flo.

«What a shame for the money», Night of Museums, House of Friends of Art in Florina,Contemporary Art Museum in Florina, (Μay 18, 2012). Trying tο find ways to    understand the operation of a museum, the En Flo group declared «Money as a shame» by reprinting their banknotes and some «Florinia». They distributed their money this time to support the Contemporay Art Museum of Florina.

The Art of Printmaking in North Greece, part 2, Artis Causa Gallery (June 6-June 28, 2012). The En Flo participated to the students exhibition of the printmaking class of the Department of Fine Arts with artist books of their banknotes and video of their actions
·
«Its the Political EconomyStupid”, Εxhibition at Τhessaloniki Centre of Contemporary Art (June 27, 2012). This time the En Flo exchanged their banknotes with the dreams of the visitors. After the confession of a dream, the visitors could take some banknotes from En Flo. This desperate act of irony depicted the concept of converting everything into a product and guided the sarcastic and radical anti-capitalist thinking for the action "What a shame, so many dreams for  money".

Printed Potatoes, Athens Print Fest 2012- International Engraving and Printmaking Festival, Municipal Gallery of Athens, Avdi Sq.
Metaxurgio (Septemeber 28, 2012). The En Flo group participated with actions refering to potatoes or using potato as the main material.  Their members collaborated with the visitors, making stamps with letters and symbols made of potatoes then printed together images and messages creating a big “Potato-Art” event in the area.

Solanum Tuberosum, Camp Point  (December 2012). Potatoes, or “Solanum tuberosum”, it’s the simple and humble food of poor people but also an important ingredient of the “haute-cuisine”. In Greece potatoes gave birth to the first “small revolution” against all those who wanted to profiteer at the expense of farmers, but also to the people who were finding their pockets empty after buying the basic food for survival. This time the En Flo group follows the paths of these experiences and acts according to their own paths giving to the potatoes a new meaning.

En Flo proposal for ART ATHINA 2013 «Sisi-phus». This year’s proposal has to do with the mythical narrative of the Sisyphean effort. This particular theme, very topical today, motivates En Flo which tries to be very sensitive to social and existential issues and to question the human condition by starting a dialogue with the public using any art skills and materials they have.
